What Will Make Christmas Shoppers Buy From You Instead Of A Cheaper Competitor?
Give customers a reason to finish their gift shopping with you, without putting everything on sale.
Someone finds the right gift in your store, checks the price on their phone, and leaves without buying.
For a small business, that's a frustrating part of Christmas trading. You've bought the stock, displayed it, and helped someone choose. Yet, another seller could end up getting the order.
Matching their price is one response. Before doing that, it helps to understand what's stopping the purchase.
What matters to a Christmas shopper
During Thanksgiving weekend in 2025, 53% of shoppers said they were seeking out promotions and coupons, according to the National Retail Federation. So yes, customers are comparing deals. But a cheaper listing doesn't answer every question a gift buyer has.
Will it arrive in time? Is it actually in stock? Can the recipient exchange it? Does it need wrapping?
Those are things your business can help with. Make the answers easy to find, on the product page, and in the store. A clear collection time or a straightforward gift exchange policy gives shoppers something concrete to weigh against a lower price elsewhere.
Make the purchase easier to finish
Think about the customer who likes the product but still has three shops to visit and five presents to wrap.
Could you offer a ready-to-give version? Pair it with a useful accessory? Let them order online and collect it on their way home? Choose something you can deliver reliably, then tell customers about it before they reach the checkout.
"Gift wrapping available" beside the price is more useful than mentioning it after someone has decided to leave. So is showing exactly when an order will be ready. These services still cost money. Include the packaging, staff time and any delivery subsidy when deciding what you can offer.
Use discounts where they have a purpose
Some shoppers will still choose the cheapest option. You don't need to build your entire Christmas offer around winning every one of them.
If you do run a promotion, give it a specific job: moving a slower line, encouraging a second purchase or increasing basket size. Check what remains after the discount and fulfilment costs. A blanket offer also gives money away on products customers might happily have bought at full price.
Before the rush
Pick one reason to buy from you beyond price, make it visible, and prepare to deliver it.
If you need a hand funding the stock, we offer up to $3 million, unsecured, with no lien. Happy to chat through your Christmas plans.
