HTS classification guide
How to calculate import duty using an HTS code
Finding the HTS code is the first step in estimating import duty, but the code alone may not provide the final landed cost.
Identify the applicable duty rate
Use the full HTS classification to locate the general duty rate and any special rates. Confirm the product’s country of origin and whether a trade agreement or preference program applies.
Also check for additional tariffs, quotas, antidumping or countervailing duties, and product-specific fees.
Apply the rate to customs value
For an ad valorem duty, multiply the applicable percentage by the customs value. Other tariff lines may use a specific rate per unit or a combination of percentage and unit-based charges.
The result is an estimate. Customs authorities determine the final classification, value, origin, and duty owed.
