What is an HTS code?
An HTS code is a product classification number used for goods imported into the United States. It helps customs authorities identify the product, apply the correct duty rate, and collect trade statistics.
What HTS means
HTS stands for Harmonized Tariff Schedule. The United States International Trade Commission publishes the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States, while US Customs and Border Protection applies the classifications at the border.
The first six digits follow the international Harmonized System. Additional digits provide classifications that are specific to the United States.
Why the code matters
The selected code can affect duty rates, eligibility for trade programs, reporting requirements, and whether additional tariffs or restrictions apply.
Importers remain responsible for using the correct classification. A lookup tool is a useful starting point, but complex products may require advice from a licensed customs broker or a binding ruling from Customs and Border Protection.
