HTS classification guide
How to find an HTS code
A good classification starts with a precise product description—not with a broad product name.
Collect the product facts
Record what the product is made from, what it does, how it is manufactured, how it will be used, and whether it is sold as a complete product, component, or set.
Search using those distinguishing characteristics. Compare the full wording of nearby headings rather than choosing the first result that mentions the product.
Validate the classification
Review the relevant legal notes and explanatory material, then check whether published customs rulings cover the same or a closely related product.
If the classification remains uncertain or commercially significant, consult a customs professional or request a binding ruling.
