HTS codes vs. HS codes
HS and HTS codes belong to the same classification family, but they are not interchangeable at every level.
The six-digit international foundation
An HS code is normally the first six digits of a classification. Those digits are designed to be recognized across countries that use the Harmonized System.
For example, the first two digits identify a chapter, the next two identify a heading, and the following two identify a subheading.
The US-specific extension
The US Harmonized Tariff Schedule extends the international code with additional digits. These digits distinguish products more precisely and connect the classification to US duty rates and statistical reporting.
Use an HTS code when classifying an import into the United States. For exports from the United States, a Schedule B number may be required instead.
